 Miami Children's Hospital Cuts Restore Time with MMS®MMS Provides Tape Protection for Hospital and Research Facility 
For medical centers coping with the archive requirements of federal document retention regulations, tape management is a crucial aspect of business operations. Miami Children's Hospital, a 268-bed medical and research facility, works exclusively with children in South Florida. Its IT department of 28 help desk staff, PC technicians, project managers and operators serves 1700 users in four locations. While the hospital's information infrastructure includes 85 servers of various types, a single iSeries 720 processes the most critical data, which is backed up to an IBM 3590 tape library. Tapes are then archived off-site. "Our iSeries does the heavy lifting in the data center," said Raul Velez, Miami Children's Hospital operations manager. "Everything from patient records and registrations to billing and payroll sits on the iSeries." Federal regulations dictate that the hospital-like other medical facilities-must retain patient records for 28 years. This requirement generates many terabytes of archived data. Finding files for recoveries could take up to 90 minutes with the existing manual system. In addition, the system allowed active tapes to be scratched or overwritten. "In one six-month period using our manual tape management system, we had four instances of incorrectly initialized tapes, which resulted in data loss," said Velez. "Because of the federal regulations and the critical nature of the data we archive, we could no longer continue with that system."
